Matthew J. Moniz Matthew Moniz, age 17, is one of Colorado’s most accomplished young alpinists, having climbed four of the seven summits and setting the world speed record for completing all the US High Points by age 12 and was named a 2010 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year for that effort. In 2014, he became the 14th American and youngest climber to summit Makalu (27,285′), the fifth highest mountain the world, reaching the top only seven days after summiting Cho Oyu (26,906′). He was recently named the 2015 Outdoor Inspiration Award Youth winner at Outdoor Retailer’s Winter Market. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America in 2012 and in March, he was honored at the Boulder Distinguished Citizens dinner as the 2015 Boulder Distinguished Scout. In 2015, Matt and his team left for Nepal for another ambitious expedition: a hoped-for summit of Mt. Everest followed by a summit of Lhotse and then an attempt to ski the Lhotse Couloir. The tragic earthquake on April 24th set Matt on a very different course. This is the second year in a row that Everest experienced a tragedy: last year, an avalanche at Everest Base Camp killed 16 Sherpas. Matt immediately saw the tremendous amount of urgency to get some help and the need to focus on of the remote areas that are often the last to receive aid. Matt and his team worked with philanthropists and donors to get money directly in the hands of people in need and simultaneously help the relief efforts. The team mounted a second expedition into the remote Laprek with 200 enthusiastic porters and critical supplies from the U.N. World Food Program and the team at dZi. A Boulder native, Matt has been active in the outdoors since his early youth and is a competitive freestyle skier, mountain biker and rock climber. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Matt is an accomplished public speaker and advocate on behalf of many causes including the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, American Himalayan Foundation, the Access Fund, and Outdoor Nation. He is sponsored by Q-Force, Mountain Hardwear, Zambarlan, Dynafit, and Leki. Learn more about Matt’s expeditions on his Facebook page, www.climb7.com or follow on twitter at “Climb7Moniz”
